Federal Correctional Institution Talladega is a medium-security federal prison in Talladega, Alabama. It opened in 1979. Federal Correctional Institution Talladega Camp opened in 1989 adjacent to the main institution. Both federal prisons house male federal inmates.
In 1991, approximately 120 Cuban detainees rioted and took seven Bureau of Prisons employees and three INS employees hostage.
Media reports indicate that at least two guards have been indicted for smuggling drugs into the prison.
Inmate Housing
Inmates live in five different housing units in two- or three-person cells. Inmates at FCI Talladega Camp live in dormitories divided into two-person cells.

In April 2016, Attorney General Loretta Lynch visited Federal Correctional Institution Talladega as part of the Obama Administration’s “Reentry Week.”
In December 2015, Bureau of Prisons Director Charles Samuels Jr., who was at one time a guard at FCI Talladega, announced his plans to retire in January 2016.
In July 2015, Marlon McNealy, who was serving a life sentence at the Talladega, Alabama federal prison for non-violent drug offenses, was granted clemency by President Obama after spending 23 years in prison.
In March 2013, Belinda Keith, a training officer at FCI Talladega, was sentenced to two years of probation after pleading guilty to smuggling tobacco into the prison.
In January 2006, Ronald Hammonds, a guard at Talladega federal prison, was arrested on charges of smuggling marijuana into the facility for prisoners.
In August 1991, approximately 121 Cuban detainees rioted after their concerns were ignored by staff, taking seven Bureau of Prisons employees and three INS employees hostage for ten days because they did not want to be returned to Cuba. Approximately 200 specially trained agents converged on the cell building. They used explosives to break open doors after hearing several loud explosions inside the prison section where the hostages were being held. All hostages were rescued, and 121 detainees were taken into custody.
