Danbury FCI

Federal Correctional Institution Danbury is a low-security facility for male inmates. The correctional institution is in Fairfield County, in the town of Danbury, Connecticut.

FCI Danbury opened in 1940 and houses both male and female inmates. The correctional institution is infamous for holding several notorious political prisoners during World War II, including:

  • Poet Robert Lowell was imprisoned because he refused to join the military.
  • Robert Henry Best was incarcerated for treason at FCI Danbury after making Nazi propaganda radio broadcasts.

Piper Kerman wrote about FCI Danbury in her book, Orange is the New Black. Netflix adapted this book into a streaming series. Kerman is one of several high-profile inmates incarcerated at the facility.

Many FCI Danbury prisoners have discussed their cases with students from the Yale University law school. In April 2014, female inmates housed at the prison were transferred to other Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities. Some of these inmates were transferred to the on-site satellite prison camp.  Inmates at the prison camp are nonviolent female inmates with less than ten years remaining on their sentences.

Danbury FSL
