Opened in 1938, Federal Correctional Institution, Englewood is a low-security facility for male inmates located in Jefferson County near Bow Mar, Colorado. It is 10 miles southwest of downtown Denver. As a Medical Care Level 2 prison, it serves the needs of patients in stable health but have chronic illnesses such as epilepsy or emphysema that require evaluation by a clinician quarterly. In addition to the low-security prison, FCI Englewood also contains an administrative detention center for male inmates and a minimum-security satellite prison camp.
The Federal Correctional Institution, Englewood Camp is a minimum-security prison for nonviolent male inmates with less than ten years remaining in their sentence. Inmates live in dormitory-style housing. Fences and guard towers do not surround the facility. At Englewood Prison Camp, emphasis is placed on pursuing educational and enrichment courses, daily work, and career/vocational development to facilitate reentry into the civilian world.
Administrative Detention Maximum, Florence occupies part of the Florence Federal Correctional Complex located in Fremont County near Florence, Colorado. Known as a supermax prison, ADX Florence is the most impenetrable of the federal prisons in Colorado or, for that matter, in the entire country. Its 37 acres house the most violent and dangerous male inmates in federal custody, people so volatile they cannot be housed in a conventional facility. Known for its extreme and bleak conditions, ADX Florence requires that prisoners spend 23 hours per day in solitary confinement in a single-person cell. During the remaining hour, they are moved to a larger one-person enclosure with only a small window through which they can see a meager slit of the sky.
For at least three years, prisoners have no contact with other inmates and must earn privileges such as television through good behavior. Even meals are spent alone, with food being delivered to each cell by guards. Numerous security precautions, including dogs, fences, and remote-controlled doors, prevent escape. Famous inmates include Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, shoe bomber Richard Reed, Boston marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, and other notorious terrorists and high-risk federal inmates.
United States Penitentiary, Florence is a high-security facility for male inmates in Fremont County near the town of Florence, Colorado. The state capital, Denver, is approximately 90 miles to its north. Opened in 1993, USP Florence is part of the 49-acre Florence Federal Correctional Complex. Inmates are secured by seven guard towers, a perimeter fence, and a patrol road. Services available to inmates include visitation rooms, laundry facilities, education areas, a chapel, barbershop, a commissary, and exercise spaces. In this prison, the men housed are deemed to be at higher risk of violence or escape or have over 30 years remaining on their sentence. One of the most notorious inmates held here was Gary Ridgway, also known as the Green River Killer.
Federal Correctional Institution, Florence is a medium-security prison located on the Florence Federal Correctional Complex campus in Fremont County near Florence, Colorado. Ninety miles south of Denver and 45 miles south of Colorado Springs, it houses only male inmates. As a Medical Care Level 2 prison, FCI Florence is equipped to meet the needs of inmates in stable health who have conditions easily controlled through quarterly evaluations by a clinician. As with other Colorado federal prisons, those incarcerated at FCI Florence have access to physical and mental health resources, substance abuse counseling, various educational programs, and job skills training designed to make transitioning to the outside world after release more successful while lessening the chance of recidivism.
Federal Correctional Institution, Florence Camp is a minimum-security prison for male inmates in Fremont County near Florence, Colorado. The federal prison camp houses nonviolent inmates with less than ten years remaining on their sentences. Sex offenders may not be housed at the minimum-security level. Inmates at the camp receive additional privileges than their supermax and high-security neighbors, can regularly interact with each other, live in dormitory-style facilities, and are expected to maintain prison employment. Due to their low-risk status, the federal prison camp does not have fences or other external walls to keep inmates contained. Mental and physical health services, recreation, education, counseling, and vocational opportunities are provided.
