Background
CI D. Ray James is a private prison. The facility opened in 1998 and initially housed Georgia state inmates.
The D. Ray James Correctional Facility was awarded a contract with the federal government in January 2010. The institution houses adult male inmates for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The facility is now owned and operated by The GEO Group, Inc.
Prison employees deliver all services, providing an environment for inmates working through the judicial system. It is one of several private facilities that house federal inmates. The Associated Press has called the facility the “backbone of the local economy,” highlighting its tax revenue importance for the community.
Inmate Housing
General population inmates live in dormitories. These consist of two-person cells and open bay dormitories.
G, H, and I housing units hold 104 inmates. Of these, there are 98 two-person cells.
Buildings K, L, and F house inmates in open bay dormitories. There are five housing units in each building.
The facility also has a 135-bed Restrictive Housing Unit for inmates in disciplinary segregation and administrative detention.
Health Services
CI D. Ray James inmates are provided with an intake examination. Routine and emergency health care and dental care are also available to the inmate population. Inmates must submit a sick call form to be evaluated for routine or chronic health care concerns. Emergency medical care is available 24 hours a day.
Psychology Services
D. Ray James Correctional Facility offers correctional mental health care. Services include counseling and programs created to have a rehabilitative impact. The Living in Balance program is available to inmates.
Inmates have access to a variety of behavioral treatment groups. These include stress management, anger management, life skills training, parenting techniques, conflict resolution, and preparation for re-entry into society.
Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP)
D. Ray James Correctional Institution does not have the Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP). Most Geo Group facilities offer RDAP and addiction programs, including Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Additional substance abuse programming is also available.

Library Services
Law and leisure libraries are available for inmate use at D. Ray James Correctional Institution. Inmates can check out fiction and nonfiction books, newspapers, and magazines. In the law library, inmates can conduct legal research and prepare legal filings.

Commissary

D. Ray James prison provides indoor and outdoor inmate recreation opportunities to the inmate population. Inmates can exercise, play sports, create art, and engage in various craft projects. The recreation yard has a soccer field, a softball diamond, and a running track.
Visitation Information for D. Ray James Prison
Family and friends may visit inmates between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. On federal holidays visitation is held between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
