Edgefield SC federal prison camp also houses male inmates. It opened in 1998 and is located adjacent to the central institution.

Both facilities are United States federal prisons under the Department of Justice.

Media reports indicate that at least one prisoner has been indicted for conspiracy to smuggle drugs into the prison.

Inmates at FCI Edgefield federal prison live in two- and three-person cells. There is a total of six housing units. Inmates at the camp live in dormitories divided into two-person pods.

UNICOR

The Edgefield SC prison UNICOR facility produces clothing and textiles. The camp does not house a UNICOR facility.

Commissary

Edgefield prison imposes a monthly spending limit of $360.00. Once each week, prisoners can visit the inmate commissary, where they can purchase food, drinks, electronics, and more.

Inmate housing units shop on a rotating basis. The rotation schedule is based on inmates’ registration numbers and is posted in the commissary and all housing units. Inmates must have funds in their accounts to purchase goods.

Stamps, Nicoderm, over-the-counter medications, and special purchase items are exempt from the spending limit. Shopping is conducted Monday through Thursday from 6:30 to 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.

Recreation Services

Recreation programs at FCI Edgefield SC federal prison include indoor and outdoor activities ranging from individualized arts and crafts programs to intramural team sports, such as:

Prison Politics at Federal Correctional Institution Edgefield

Most respondents said that there is a low level of prison politics. A limited number suggested a medium level of racial politics and that cars are common.

Paperwork concerns sometimes come into play as they concern racial groups, but not often. According to one respondent, “The white race and, in particular, the Aryan Brotherhood and Dirty White Boys can be bad about politics.”

Level of Violence

Most respondents said that there is very little violence at the Edgefield SC prison. However, in particular, one respondent stated that “Edgefield is right in the middle when it comes to violence.” He explained, “[there are] more stabbings and assaults here than I would have expected.”

While one inmate pegged it as a 4 out of 10 for safety, another felt it was a 6 out of 10. One respondent stated that “the violence is at a minimum.” Another inmate explained that there is “a lot of talk, but minor violence.”

Vulnerable Populations

Sex offenders, informants, and LGBT inmates can walk the Federal Correctional Institution Edgefield yard. According to one inmate, “They are all allowed here, and the transgender people are treated fairly.” Another inmate explained it as a “protective custody institution,” though this appears to be a minority opinion.

In July 2016, infamous poker cheat Christian Lusardi was sent to Federal Correctional Institution Edgefield after his parole from state prison to serve out his five-year sentence for the manufacture and sale of bootleg DVDs.

In December 2004, Kenneth Tager, a prisoner at FCI Edgefield SC federal prison, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess and intent to distribute in a marijuana smuggling scheme involving a woman, Pamela Forsyth, who was sentenced to probation for bringing it to him.
