The Prison Law Blog, a property owned and operated by Middle Street Press, is proud to announce its entry into the publishing realm. Books. Simply stated, Middle Street Press aims to publish books that are needed, irrespective of a profit motive. Let’s face it, not all books are money makers, but just because a book isn’t going to be a blockbuster doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be published. In fact, there are a number of needed books that don’t come to the marketplace because publishers aren’t willing to take a risk on them. Middle Street Press and the Prison Law Blog do not subscribe to such beliefs. In fact, we are actively seeking needed texts of interest to prisoners, their families, and others in the prison law field.
We, the staff of the Prison Law Blog and Middle Street Press, earned our stripes in the book and online publishing industries. Collectively, we, as authors, have over ten books to our credit and have reviewed or promoted hundreds of other texts in all genres. To add to this, we have authored hundreds of articles, edited many texts, and made good friends and connections in the book and online publishing industries. This is simply what we do. We write, and we publish. And, of course, we advocate for meaningful change. Social justice causes are at the heart of all we do.
Our publishing strategy is simple and effective. We will offer a healthy contract to authors of needed books that are of interest to prisoners, their families, and others in the prison industry (e.g., attorneys, corrections professionals, etc.). We will produce quality products, and we will engage in the marketing of the text, book review outreach, blogger outreach, prison marketplace outreach, and advertisements in the prison presses. While we can’t promise a huge advance or fame and fortune, we can promise a quality product that will exceed both your and your readers’ expectations. We can promise a professional text which will improve readers’ lives and advocate for meaningful change. We offer the service of bringing essential manuscripts to the marketplace and ensuring that those who need such books know about them.
If you are an author of a social justice, legal, or prison-focused text and believe that your manuscript would be a good fit with the Prison Law Blog and Middle Street Press, please submit a book proposal and the first three chapters of the manuscript via postal mail to the below address. Upon receipt, we will review the manuscript for suitability, and, if we feel it would be a good fit, we will reply indicating our interest, thus opening a channel of communication and negotiation of terms. It’s that simple.
At the moment, we are particularly interested in nonfiction texts which tackle prison law, prison education, religion in prison, defense of prison disciplinary proceedings, and scholarly texts which examine the problems of incarceration (e.g., overcrowding, lack of rehabilitative and educational opportunities, the prison culture, etc.) and potential solutions to such problems.
